My husband and I just bought a small farm (20 arces) in mid-Maine. We need a tractor to do: brush hogging to clear overgrown fields, snow plowing the drive, tilling the garden, moving fallen trees, etc. This will at least for now be a "hobby" farm but may evolve into a organic produce business. The land has a pretty good slope in several areas that will have to be crossed to get to the lower fields. We are looking for recommendations on what model tractor would be good to buy. We want to spend less that $3k. We are concidering an 8N for $2500 (with loader). Thanks for your input.

The N is like buying a house too small, after a few years you want something bigger and then you have try to sell the smaller one first. You want a tractor that will carry you through from hobby to production farming. A live pto will get you through baling and tilling. Power steering would be better with a loader. Full time hydraulics is better all the time. 35+ hp is better. Some of the Fords that fit this are 660, 860,4000. If you shop and keep an eye out you could get one of these in the $3000-4000 range. Seems like I saw a discussion on Tractor Talk were somebody recommended other brands that fit this criteria.

I agree ith scott that the Transmission of the Nseries tractor is geared too high for using a tiller. However it is perfect for a one or two bottom plow and a disk.

Note of caution on the loader. In addition to the need for an auxilliary pump to run it, or need to modify the existing hydraulics, the N chasis wasn't designed to hold the extra weight induced by adding a loader. The N does not have power steering, so turning the wheels with a load in the bucket becomes a chore. Also, the weight in the loader bucket rests on the front axle, which is connected to the tractor with a king pin. The king pin does fine supporting the weight of the tractor, but the added weight of a loader can cause it damage.

However, for the price, the N series tractor provides a lot of service. Also, they hold their value very well so that if you needed more tractor in the future, you would more than likely be able to get out what you paid for it.

Good Luck!

N's are great for most of what you mentioned. The front loader will require a seperate hydrolic pump and a rear one would be powered off the control arms with a tip trip lever for dumping. If the one you are describing already has the front loader it sounds like a deal if everything works. A N will not operate a tiller. You may want to go to a 800 series.
Good luck.
Scott
