NEED HELP I purchased a new 6 volt coil for my 8n it has + & - markings preveous coil just had battery marked on one side of the terminal. I have conected the + side of coil to the battery side and the - side of the coil to the dist, is this correct?? I am still having problems with tractor runing beyond 5 or 10 min, points & cond replaced, if I let it sit it starts and runs for a short period & stops could it be a bad condencer I know its not a fuel problem because no spark. I replaced comp wire harnes new spark leads, new dist cap, new plugs and every elect terminal clean and bright any ideas would help THANKS ONT RICK

I just replaced the coil on my 8n (front mount ).

At first --no spark at plug .

I measured the voltage at the terminal on the coil --6 V .

Turned the engine over with meter on coil -- no change, still 6V .

Took the coil out -left the wire on ,measured the voltage at the little spring --6V .

Touched the spring to ground --nice spark at HV lead .

Then I bent the little spring a small ,calibrated amount -maybe a 1/8 inch -- put it bacxk in ---Hit the starter button and away it went --started right up .

The problem was -- the spring was not making contact with the point connection in the distributor .

I rechecked the voltage at the connection on the coil -- it fluctuated as the engine was cranked over .

By the way --- it is not just A coil --- but a transformer with a low voltage primary winding of relatively few turns ofheavy wire ,over which is the secondary winding of a large number of very fine wire .

Rick....try jumping around your ignition switch that could be your problem.

Ont Rick, The Primary (low Voltage) ignition has two conditions that are both very Important. Use your
Tractor ammeter to confirm both

1.) With the points Open "NO" current flows in the Ignition Circuit. Ammeter indicates 0 (zero)

2.) With the Points Closed , (side mount) >4.0 amps flows through the Coil. Ammmeter indicates ~4 amps (discharge)

If when you crank the engine and the ammeter flickers between 0 and -4 amps you can be sure that High Voltage is been developed and going somewhere(kinda like squeezing the trigger of a 357 Mag, you don't see the bullet but!!) If the Primary (low voltage) is OK look at the ouput of the coil, wire, rotor, dist cap

Hope this Helps

Sounds like the coil is overheating because of no or shorted out BALLAST RESISTOR(S). There must be hundreds of posts on this board addressing that problem.
If positive ground coil the + terminal should be connected to the distributor. This is regardless of whether you are now running a +ve or -ve ground.

Good Luck
