12 volt unconversion question

A short story made long:
I have an 8N and an 850. The 8N was prettied up this past summer and I intend to keep it reserved for light work and use the 850 for the more rugged stuff. My 850 had some really beat up sheet metal, a grill that was cut up to mount a loader pump and a repaired crack in the lift. The good points are the motor is rebuilt and very strong, rubber is brand new, clutch new, brakes good, and power steering. I bought a second 850 with straight metal, a good grill, and a very good lift last week. It runs well but is pretty much in 'maintained' rather than recently rebuilt condition and lacks the power steering . I have swapped lifts, have the metal off the newbie and am getting it ready to paint. I will paint the newbie's red when it stops raining then put my beat-up but well painted sheet metal on it. I was going to swap light bulbs because my workhorse is 12 volts and newbie is 6 volts but then it occurred to me that I may never have another chance to put my workhorse back to 6 volts for free. It appears that the things I would have to do are:
a) Remove alternator and 2 wires to terminal block
b) Remove generator and 3 wires to voltage regulator, regulator and wire from regulator to terminal block. c) Swap coils (neither tractor has a external ballast)
d) Swap batteries changing ground reference
e) Install generator, voltage regulator and wires
f) Install alternator and wires
g) Last and here is the question: The 6 volt tractor has a solenoid with one small post to activate it, the 12 volt tractor has 2 small posts. Do I need to worry about the different solenoid styles or is the second post just another way of routing the hot wire up to the terminal block??

I have absolutely no reason to do this other than the fact that I like the Ford to be the way it was intended to be. Both tractors start just fine the way they are although the 12 volt certainly does spin a lot faster.

Paul,

To add to what Dell said, since the 12v conversion works, why not just "swap" everything EXCATLY as it is. That way you don't need to worry about the second terminal. Hook it up on the new 850 just like it is on the old 850. Seems simple to me, or am I missing sonething - I do have senior moments a lot! :-)

If you REALLY like the idea of your 850 being ORIGINAL - go for it! Your engine is recently rebuilt so you should not have all the other problems that 12v conversions are done to mask. You seem to be able to work on the tractor with no fear/problems AND you have read Dell "mantra" here often enough to say it in your sleep, so you should be able to keep a 6V system in tip top shape. In college (Ames, IA), I had a '50 with a tired flat head 6 that would start at 20 below, four cylinders has to be easier.

Regards,
Larry

So I'm the contrarian!!
That's my duty as an old F@RT! :-)

Paul..... ..Sounds to me that your 850 workhorse w/PS has a successfull 12 volt conversion. Donna mucka round, leave it. I'm a 12 volt advocate for the right reasons, and you have expressed the right reasons. Daily workhorse, 12 volt really spins the starter and in the Minnisota winter thats a real plus. And now that you will have some good tin on your workhorse, enjoy painting it. Then in your "spare time" you can direct your energies on your 850 donner tractor and convert it to 12 volts too..... ...Dell

Thanx for the opinion Dell... The donor is going to be sold at auction at the end of the month. I am just investing a tune-up and some left over paint in hopes that the paint will help make up for the dents I am transplanting.
