WHEN YOU REPLACE THE BUSHING IN AN 8N 1950 SIDEMOUNT DISTRIBUTOR; ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO DRILL AN OIL HOLE THROUGH THE BUSHING. IF SO WHAT SIZE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND? THANK YOU

There is an oil groove on the back boss that would facilitate lubrication from splash... Make sure that you take a pointed object and clean out this groove.. If yours is the old style there should be a set screw in the hole in the middle of the rear boss, remove this set screw and pull out the wick. then lubricate the wick and put it back in... The newer cam and weights assemblies have a brass cover in this hole and I guess they do not intend for this to ever be lubricated again.. What the heck sell more parts this way..
Happy Motoring

The front bushing on the front mounted distributor shaft never was lubricated and seems to last about 50 years????? ???

That is what the wick is for inside the shaft. There is a small hole in front where the lube is supposed to come out and lubricate the front bearing. What good it does, who knows, it has to be better than nothing... Cannot hurt anyway. As I stated the new one that I have purchased does not have the set screw in the shaft to oil the wick if it has a wick.. But it would not hurt whenever you remove the distributor to take the shaft out and give it a light coat of lube... As you know, all one has to do is remove the retaining ring. One can then also inspect the weights and springs that have a habit or wearing down and the rivets that hold the weights also have a tendency to loosen.
Have a happy...

HMMM... Did the old one have a hole? Is your new bushing an original made in India super part? If the shaft is inside the bushing then the bushing would have to have a hole, unless the oiler tube drains against the shaft from above. I bet Zane or Claus knows. 1/8 inch is as big as I would go.

THANKS. THE OLD ONE HAD A HOLE BUT IT WAS MODIFIED WITH A SHIM STOCK BUILD UP AND A GREASE ZERK WAS PUT IN PLACE OF THE OILER CUP.
