FIRST ---GOD BLESS AMERICA AND ALL THE CHILDREN WITH LOST PARENTS TODAY---

I have just rebuilt carb. and while trying to start (which was a problem)I had the breather pipe off at the carb. and I heard a pop from the motor and also a hard vaccuum from the carb air intake. When I turned it over the next time a I heard a grinding noise from the motor.

Before rebuiding the carb. I had a pinging noise from #3 cyclinder. I found a bad manifold gasket/ replaced it also. Then repalced carb. NOW THIS I had a 49 8N that ran pretty good. It hadn't been worked very hard in probably 6 years until this past summer. Where do I look? I am laid off from International Paper and dont have alot of money for parts. Please help.

Sorry so long just flabergasted right now and don't know where to start.

Thanks for any help this forum has helped me alot
Ps I had good compression before all this also. Right now scared to turn over engine.

Thanks Robert

I checked compression it's OK. Checked starter/ring gear it's ok. The grinding I'm hearing is coming from near where the ring gear is at. At the back of the motor. Could this be a bearing or what?

Thanks Guys
This info has been a lot of help for my dads OLE RED BELLY.

I turned the ring gear with a screwdriver. I couldn't feel a drag or any unusal noise when doing this. I ran the starter on the bench. It did ok. I was wondering how far the bendix should engage? I replaced the ring gear about 1 yr. ago it looks ok. The starter shaft looks like it has some warpage to it a little. I havent tried using the clutch while starting. If I have good compression does that exclude anything inside the motor? Thank you very much I need this help.

You say the starter shaft is warped. I think you found you're problem. Remove the starter and tow start it to be sure if you want but I'll bet that is it.

I would replace the starter and bendix both. The bendix is probably damaged by the bent shaft. About $150 for a rebuilt starter and a new bendix.Get the positive drive bendix and DO NOT extend it before you install it. Or you will be sorry. Dave <*)))><

Before pulling the starter all the way out put a nut on the through bolt to keep the back cover from coming off. If the cover comes off far enough the brushes will come off the comutator and they can be a bugger to put back on.

when I try and start the ole 8N . Push the start button if it doesn't start in a couple of seconds the bendix will disengage and starter will hum . Is this normal? Not like my truck where you can keep running the starter as long as you trying

Chain the N to you're pick up or whatever and tow it. Put the tractor in 3rd. gear When it is moveing let the clutch out. Once it is running put the clutch in and take it out of gear.

Tow Start?
That's what we do to a John Deere before a tractor show.
