MY TRACTOR STARTED TO MISS. THEN IT STARTED TO BACK FIRE SOME. THEN IT DID NOT WANT TO IDLE. IT WILL START BUT RUNS REALY RUFF AND MISSES. IF YOU LET OUT ON THE CLUTCH TO INGAUGE THE PTO IT WILL KILL THE ENGINE.IS THIS A CARB PROBLEM OR COULD THERE BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE POINTS OR COIL. I HAVE A FRONT MOUNT DISTRIBUTER AND HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE COIL GOING OUT BUT IT USUALY WILL NOT RUN WHEN THE COIL GOES BAD. IF THE POINTS GO BAD WILL THEY CAUSE THIS SAME PROBLEM? HAS ANY BODY HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE? ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

My ole 9N did the same thing, backfired so hard it blew the intake part of the gasket....

I replaced the gasket, still missed....

I then went to the Ford Dealer, and bought the tune up kit, that had the correct plugs, points, rotor and condensor. It has feeler gauges included in the kit to set the plug and point gap.
It also has all the gaskets needed too.

The problem is probably due to the condensor...I had the same problem with a Chevy truck one time, and I figured water in the fuel, or fuel breakdown, stopped at a garage and the mechanic there figured the same, (without my input)

I put in drygas to burn the water out of the fuel, and it got worse. I finally looked at the points, changed them, no change.

I then changed the condensor, and it purred like a kitten. Ran fine all the way from Michigan, to Southern Indiana where I live.

Sure wouldn't have believed a condensor could cause a problem like that....but by using the elimination method, found it was the culprit.

Hope this helps you...

Sounds like a dirty carb or dirty fuel lines. I'd suggest starting at the gas tank and the fuel sediment bowl assembly. Be sure gas is flowing properly and the screen is clean. Check the fuel lines themselves and any other fuel line filters you may have. Then consider a carb cleaning or rebuild. If you're still having problems, then and if possible, you may also want to do a compression check. Start with the simple fuel line check and progress to carb cleaning/rebuild. Also, be sure to properly set both the idle and main needles on the carb. Hope this helps.
