I needed to remove fifteen or so Black Walnuts from my building lot and remove the stumps My '49 N pulled the logs just fine and I rented a Bobcat 325 Mini-excavator to dig the stumps with. I got all but two big ones out, but the bobcat was really out of its league.
What are my options for the other two or am I gonna have to hire someone with a full size excavator in to finish up the job?

All but two?? I wish I had that kind of luck, Go out and rent a stump grinder and be done with them forever or locate a professional service to do it , its worth the money. I HATE TREE STUMPS!!

I'll tell you what I did, based on an old friend's recommendation. I was a little skeptical, but it worked.

I removed two very sizable stumps by drilling holes in them, filling the holes several times with kerosene (over about a 24 hour period) to make sure it soaked in good. I lit a fair-sized fire over each stump, feeding limbs and other firewood to keep it burning well. Kept a good flame going for a couple of hours to get the stumps burning well and then let it all 'die out' (no water or attempt to put out the fire, I just quit feeding them). But the stumps continued to smolder over about 3 days, well below ground level, and eventually burned away all the remaining stump leaving two holes.

Needless to say, you should scrape away flamables in a circle around each stump so you don't have anything spread while the stumps are smouldering.

good luck,
Tom
