Thanks to the forum for all the help the ole red belly is running good now. Last night re-checked timing, pnts, plugs, and wires. Also checked the carb. out. First time I tried to start she fired right up . Thanks to Doug and Dave Smith for your help with starter and other things.

One other Question I remember years ago before Electronic ignition my Dad tellimg me a way to check if the alternator was working. I think that you would need to pull the pos. bat. cable and if she keep running it was working ok. Is this right or have I mised somthing.

Thank You guys for all the help

Getting ready for the Trail of Tears Bike ride this weekend some 50,000 bikes are expected to ride from Chatt. Tenn, to Waterloo AL.

My part of the country. I live just off the Natchez Trace on the South side of the Tennessee River about 3-4 miles from the route. I've been working a lot on the 8N lately also. Just cleaned the tank, all the filters, rebuilt the carb, new points, plugs, and coil.

I hope I have resolved the bad miss after heating up for 45 minutes although I haven't been able to work the tractor since the points and coil were added to the list. It's been so bad, I was out looking at a bigger JD with more power.

Lot of 8N's around here.

Good luck on the ride. I may go over and watch the procession down Waterloo road as it passes.

Yes if you're alternator is working it should keep running with the key on. You can also put a screwdriver to the back side of the alternator and you will feel the magnetic field pull the screwdriver to it. Also if you you have a volt meter instead of a amp meter note the voltage before starting should be 12.6 volts. If after you start it reads higher it is charging. It should be just under 14 volts. If it is much higher you will cook the battery. Dave <*)))><

It would tell you that the Alternator is putting out enough current to keep the ignition alive. Nothing more.
Happy Motoring

Ride safe and put on some red, white & blue clothing.
