I have noticed that while my 8N is working MUCH, MUCH better I have a small starting problem. My entire electrical and carb/fuel system have been meticulously and properly overhauled. My tractor works so well that I used it for nearly 3 hours yesterday and even hogged at night with my lights on! (very nice)

The problem is this:
Upon starting with choke out (updraft carb you know), the starter roars into play and then nothing. I do it again and then when I RELEASE the starter button and think nothing is going to happen, "BA BA BA BAAA BAAA BAAAAA AA BAAAAA AAA"
it suddenly and slowly roars to life. I have ZERO OTHER PROBLEMS when hogging, no loss of power, nothing. There is also a cloud of white and sometimes black puff smoke EVERY SINGLE time that I start my tractor cold. I never had this problem before.

I am going to check this morning for plug fouling - maybe it is buring off the deposits or something before it will start up properly????
Maybe my mixture is not correct? Please let me know what I should check. I did verify proper voltage to the coil and all filters are perfect.

Let me know what you think and thanks!
Andy

The book says you choke it just for a sec. Pull the choke out, push the starter, and immediately push the choke in. Works for me.

I apologized to Robert - AL on the original post. I am past that and seemingly the others on the forum have noticed that my commitment to being more patience and open with questions.

Now, I did search the archive and I had a question to ask. If you find the need to keep insulting me about this, then at least have the GUTS TO STAND UP AND POST YOUR NAME.

My guess is your overchoking it. Each N is an individual, but I rarely use the choke to start mine, and then just for less than a second or until I hear the first POP. If I tried to start mine as you are doing, I don't think it would start. My 2¢ Steve 8N 169302

I agree with Steve here Andy, try it without choke and see what happens. Out here near the S. Oregon coast I hardly ever use the choke, unless we get one of them cold spells like y'all had last winter.

Sounds like an electrical problem.
Your starter might be pulling your voltage
too low for the sparkies to run. As soon as you
let go of the starter button the voltage rises
to where the sparkies are strong enough to fire.
Since the engine is still spinning it will start.
You could check the voltage at the coil with the starter spinning.

The smoke might be from the extra gas in the cylinders that was not burned when the sparkies
were not working.

As others here have said, be sure _all_ electrical
connections are "clean, bright, tight". If you have a six volt battery be sure that your battery
cables are big enough. The cables designed for for twelve volt systems are NOT big enough for six volt.

Let me add that the smoke completely disappears and never returns after the tractor is up to proper idle and running speed. The smoke is only initial and last for only a few seconds. I do have this problem with other "equipment" in the barn - so I am thinking condensation problem???

hmmmmm mmm.
