I'm looking for a manure spreader to use on my 8N. Is it better to get a ground drive or PTO? What size is best suitable, especially in some hilly terrain? Someone told me the 8N would handle a 80 bushel PTO drive. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I have a small ground drive that a guy gave me just to get rid of it (don't know the size but it's not real big) but wish I had a PTO driven one. For my small operation I don't have much room to spread and would rather pile it up into compost piles, for now I spread it.

A PTO drive is always a better solution. Reason being that you have much more flinging power (not to be indelicate), you can fling while you are standing still and moving slowly, and (most important if you are in a cold climate) you can unload a loaded spreader before it freezes solid. Ask me how I know this . . .

A PTO driven spreader has more moving parts and more to maintain - you'll need to be at it regularly with a grease gun.

80 bu might be a bit heavy for an 8N. That's four yards of kaka, which could weigh as much as six tons if it's wet, and the spreader itself will weight upwards of a ton. I wouldn't pull that around with an 8N in any kind of hilly terrain - you don't have the brakes or the steering to control it. I'd be looking at a smaller unit in the 20-40 bu class, and planning to make more trips.

I don't know if I would pull 80 bushels of wet manure with an N. A PTO drive is probably better. If it is muddy you can back up to a corner and let it fly. ( I used to spread when it was very cold. I have been hit in the head with a frozen pie many times.) Can't you tell?
