In the next week or two I am going to have some leveling and landscaping done. Approximately 150' X 200'. This is an area that I will mow with a 5' finishing mower if it grows. A cat will do the main work and then to finish up I have a three section drag and a 6" landscape rake. I intend on seeding it with a hand cranked seeder with a bag. Does anyone have any suggestions on what seed to use. This is in Southern Minnesota. I have been considering a mix that is approximately 45% Bluegrass, 25% perennial Ryegrass, 10% annual ryegrass, and 20% Fescue. Does this sound ok for a fall planting? Does the ground need to be rolled before or after seeding? Is blown hay the best cover for this work? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Whether you go with the link below or choose your own seed source, there is one thing not specificly addressed. The bluegrass we have been so fond of in this part of the world is not a deep rooted grass and needs water to look good. The way the summers have been recently lawns get mighty brown in a few weeks of dry weather and don't get green until it cools off and rains. I'd go with all fescue whether slow growing or not - you will be far happier with the results. If you need instant gratification there are some extremely fast growing annual grasses thatr will provide green while the perinials take root.

This is no-mow fescue that you refer to. It is a mix of several fescues. I'm planting now, and I planted some earlier this summer. It is NOT CHEAP. But you can burn your lawnboy or use it for target practice - if you get the stuff to grow. It requires good drainage however. And will not work much further south than St. Louis or so. (There is a map on that website).

I have been told that these fescues can get a fungus that makes them toxic to wildlife and livestock. I don't know much about this; would like to hear more.

On the seed issue - like a lot of other things, you mostly get what you pay for. I would check with seed corn dealers, as they usually sell grass seeds or at least can steer you in the right direction. Different soils require different seeds so talk to someone that really knows what they are talking about rather than being only interested in making the sale. I think you will find the seed cheaper and fresher than what you would go to Wal-Mart or the likes and buy. As to the cover, hay tends to have weeds mixed in it so you get weed seeds too. I would go for straw which is what I see most of the roadsides get covered with. Bottom line - a local expert can advise you better than me from central Illinois.
