Oil Pressure

Had my 51 8N out for a spin around the farm tonite and I noticed my oil pressure was running around 22 at 1/2 throtle and about 30 at 3/4 throtle. I had always had a steady 41 regardless of the throtle position.

I went back to the barn and the oil level was fine.

Shut it off and it did the same thing...low pressure.

Here is the odd part. I took it for a short run and went full throtle in 3rd gear for a bit and let up for a bit and then went full out again.

After this 1/4 mile my oil gauge read 41.

What do you make of this. Did I blow something through the system? was a connection to the gauge loose?

Regards

Sal

Sal:
Twenty one pounds of oil pressure is very good pressure for these 8N's. Normally when cold, pressure may rise to the mid 30's, then a good engine may drop down to the twenties. Many run at 10-15 pounds for years. Obviously higher rpms will increase oil pressure. If you are getting 40 pounds normally, you have a very tight engine. Since the gauge connection is to the block I can't imagine how a lose connection would be the cause of your drop without oil leaking out of the connector. Be happy with the kind of pressure you are getting.

Mike, I am thrilled with 41 for a pressure and that it holds constant with the engine warm or cold. Even after Bush Hoging for 3 hours the pressure is right there at 41 and on cold morning starts it goes to 41.

I was shocked to see the gauge so far down then to pop back up to 41 and stay there...I just don't get what gave me that problem for about 15 minutes.

Thanks.

Sal
