Would like some advice regarding selection of a 12 V battery, please. Had my 8N converted last year and the mechanic gave me a used 12 V he had at the shop which has now gone bad. What is the best 12 V battery to use in terms of cold cranking amps and such? I want it to have all the cranking gusto it can handle but don't want to over do it. Thanks, Paul

Hey Paul, I would buy an Optima battery, 850 cranking amps, 7 year guarantee,no battery acid to ruin your tractor, car or whatever.I have one in everything that runs except the wifes car. Used to buy Die-hards and Interstate.Have a 530 Case that had a dead battery or low battery about every time I tried to start it.Put in the first Optima sold in our county, 8 years ago, it has started every time since. I would'nt waste money on anything less.

Paul, I had to replace my alternator because my battery would not take a charge. When I did the guy at the shop told me to use a heavy duty battery, because of the vibration and beating it will take working on a tractor. s you know these small tractors don't have much of a suspension to absorb any shock. The guy said that the car batteries were just not tough enough and that there was a good chance that the plates inside would come loose and short out after a while. He did recommend marine batteries also.

Anything that will fit won't be over doing it. I put a Farm & Fleet 25-700CA in my 8N because it was a nice fit and it was on sale at the time. Your alternator should more than keep up with an electric sprayer pump. I run a Shurflo 12v pump on my 16 hp garden tractor. The kohler engine on it doesn't have much of a charging system and I have no problem running the sprayer and keeping the battery charged.
Hope this helps - Jack

Let's not get CCA and CA confused. CA is a term they started to use recently to confuse the public that is already confused. CA is about 1/2 the rating of CCA because CCA, (Cold Cranking Amps) is determined at zeroo F. Where CA is determined at ambient. Batteries loose energy capacity as the temperature decreases.

If you are running sprayers and etc. that may require charging after the N is shutdown, you may want to consider a marine battery. They will withstand the constant drain and charge routine.

I changed mine over this spring so I could run 12v sprayers and use it to jump start other vehicles. I just went to Walmart and found one that fit into the tray. I believe I ended up with a group 24 size which has plenty of CCA. The 8N just does not have that large of an engine to justify more. Just watch your battery cables. There are a couple variations of the group 24; some have reversed + and - locations and your wires won't reach if you get the wrong one.
