I am changing the king pin, crankshaft pully and the alternator pully. I was wondering if changing the size of the alt. pully (to a smaller one) would affect the output of the alt.

Thank You Robert

Using a smaller alt pulley is a good idea. It will turn the alternator rotor faster and speed up the rotating magnetic field. The alternator will excite (start charging) at a lower engine RPM, you won't have to rev to start charging. It will have better output at lower RPM also. Our tractors don't turn high RPM so you will not have to worry about overspeeding the rotor and damaging the alt. I use something in the area of 2" - 2.5". Just use a good quality belt.

I use a small pulley on my alternator with a regular V-belt. It has been on the tractor for three years with no problems. I have a 3 wire Delco alternator and it charges well from idle speed on up. I would go the same way again if I were to do it over. HTH Don

Smaller pulley on the alternator makes it turn faster. You probably won't notice any difference at high RPMs but it will charge better at idle. Be sure to use a notched belt to get a better grip on the smaller pulley.

I would do anything to avoid using a notched belt. Darn things fall apart in a couple of hours. Used little bitty ones on alternators, and great big ones on my combine main drive. All of them junk.

Jack, I figured it would turn faster , I was just wondering if there was some reason that I might not want to go to a pully that is about twice as small. Not much bigger round than a coke can.
Thank's

Remember the smaller the pulley, the sharper the turn the belt has to make, therefore the belt is flexing more. This generates more heat in the belt and earlier failure. I use a very small pulley on my alternater, but keep a very close eye on its condition. (Also have my spare available for use on short notice)
