I read the other day on this forum that you should try to avoid bush hoggin in 2nd gear. Can anyone tell me what gear you should hog in and why. There are some places that I can run in 3rd gear just fine. What about it guy's any thoughts on this.

Use the right gear for the job. Don't be afraid to use second gear.

Robert,

I have an 8N and I use 2nd gear for mower most of the time. However, I know there are no obstacles and my grass is thin. I think the warning about using 2nd gear on an 8N is that if you hit something, it can break the gear.

that advice came from Zane SHerman who used to fix these tractors for a living. I believe his warning was for 8N owners not to use a roatry mower with second gear because of the weakness of that particular 8 N gear. I believe also that he said using a finish mower that is belt driven is okay for 2nd gear on the 8N. He had no such warnings for the 2nd gear on the 9N or 2N.

After reading discussion on it maybe a year or so back, I tried 1st and 3d and have settled on 1st. It is slow, but does a more-thorough job so I have to hog less often. If I use 3d, seems like my ground speed is so high compared to the speed of the blades that a lot of stuff gets missed or not chopped up very well and I have to go back again in just a few weeks.

Just my observation.

Tom

First gear a must in heavy, thick mowing. Got to kepp the mower RPM's upto do an effect job. I was using a 5' mower on my 9N in thick, heavy, wet grass and weeds in first gear and the old girl amazed me -- had enough guts left in her to twist off a pto adapter. On the rough ground I mow anything other than first gear would wreck mower and tractor.
