Missouri Gas Stations Fined For Price-Gouging On Sept 11

Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES ST. LOUIS -(Dow Jones)- Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon is threatening to sue gas stations that increased their prices above $2.49 a gallon the day the World Trade Center and Pentagon were attacked.

Nixon sent letters Tuesday and Wednesday to 38 gas stations statewide telling them to pay three times their profit from Sept. 11 or $750 in fines, whichever is larger, by Oct. 1. The stations must also pay $250 to cover investigation costs, the attorney general's office said in a release.

Those stations that don't come forward might be sued and face penalties of $1, 000 per sale, the maximum allowed under Missouri law.

The Attorney General's Office didn't identify the gas stations, but spokesman Scott Holste told Dow Jones Newswires that they are located all over the state, including the St. Louis and Kansas City areas.

The Attorney General's Office is continuing to investigate gas stations and suppliers to see if more of them were involved in price-gouging. As many as 10 to 15 more letters demanding the payment of fines could be sent out in the next few days, Holste said.

The night of Black Tuesday, a local Exxon station in Pickerington, on Hill Road, raised their prices to $6.00 per gallon!!! It was a media circus. The next day they had a sign saying "We were wrong. We are sorry." There haven't been many cars in the station since. I personally hope they go out of business. The state auditor has brought them up on charges.....

Just got back from a trip south. Paid $1.80 in Ill, $1.49 in MO, 1.69 here in Des Moines and only $1.33 just south of Memphis in Mississippi. Wish I would have had a tanker.....

Here in central Florida the state followed up on several reports of gas price gouging last week. All were confronted by state officials within one day, all those investigated immediately returned prices to near normal but they are still subject to prosecution. This was over price chances of cents not dollars. If your State has no Department for Price Gouging with a toll free number to call, You should rally the forces and urge your State Officials to enact one!

There was a company in Boca Raton FL, where the owner made his employees take down their American flags, etc from their cubilcles, because some of the other employees were "offended" by the display of the Star and Stripes. We are reaping the whirlwind....

I know the company well since I work in MIS for an insurance company. When I saw the news item on the internet, I immediately printed it IN COLOR and posted it where all could see. In the same article, they admitted they were wrong and later handed out flags and lapel pins. We are all proud of those employees who went out to protest the obvious lack of respect the company displayed against our nation. Nobody had better tell me I can't wave my flag in my country.

Or the floating casino in Osceola Iowa that wouldn't let it's employees wear red white and blue ribbons or American Flag pins on their uniforms. They quickly relented after this was reported in local media. Steve
