Missouri Gas Stations Fined For Price-Gouging On Sept 11 Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES ST. LOUIS -(Dow Jones)- Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon is threatening to sue gas stations that increased their prices above $2.49 a gallon the day the World Trade Center and Pentagon were attacked. Nixon sent letters Tuesday and Wednesday to 38 gas stations statewide telling them to pay three times their profit from Sept. 11 or $750 in fines, whichever is larger, by Oct. 1. The stations must also pay $250 to cover investigation costs, the attorney general's office said in a release. Those stations that don't come forward might be sued and face penalties of $1, 000 per sale, the maximum allowed under Missouri law. The Attorney General's Office didn't identify the gas stations, but spokesman Scott Holste told Dow Jones Newswires that they are located all over the state, including the St. Louis and Kansas City areas. The Attorney General's Office is continuing to investigate gas stations and suppliers to see if more of them were involved in price-gouging. As many as 10 to 15 more letters demanding the payment of fines could be sent out in the next few days, Holste said. -By Desiree J.
