Can't Start 8N

I'm new to the tractor game. I have a beautiful 8N that I've put about 20 hours on. But now I can't start it. I took the carb. apart and shook out whatever stuff was in it. But still can't get it to start. The battery is cranking (although I did run it down trying to start it). Any suggestions: I figure the problem has to be fuel related. Although someone did mention something about the air intake.

Well let me give it a try....
1.Carburator is getting fuel.
2.Is there spark between the coil and the distibutor? (take off coil wire and hold about 1/8 in from a ground and look for spark, should be blue.)
3.Are the plugs getting fire?( check same as above.)
4. No spark at plugs the points may have slipped closed.
5. Check ignition switch with a test light. You should have power to the positive side of the coil.
6. Pray loudly.
Hope this helps, Paul

Thanks for the good ideas. I'm going to try them tomorrow.

To this point I've taken the carb off twice to make sure fuel is getting into it. Both times it was filled with gas. The gas did not appear gunky at all. I also took out the pin and wiped it off. The tip of it is somewhat scored. Is that normal? Is there any possibility of it being the culprit, and is it included in a carb kit?

Lord willing I'll gettin' it going with your all's suggestions tomorrow, without losing my sanctification.

God Bless

...sometimes I tell spouse about a job: "that's a 2 cuss word job." :-)

Is the 12 v conversion done ok? anything/wires look/smell fried, fallen off, loose, greasy, cut?

Check out 12 v conversion in the archives (see above links). I've not followed the posts in detail, but there's a wealth of info there re: correct resister (value), placement, Hopefully, you're conversion was done well.

Good luck and let us know how you're doing on this.

Pastor Scott,

Another simple thing to check. The ignition switch on the 8N's is not very good. I always look to see that I have a discharge on the amp meter before I hit the starter button. I have replaced my key switch, but old habits die hard.

Pastor Scott-

I don't know how mechanically inclined you may be, but if you have spark at all four cylinders, then the problem is most likely fuel related. First things first. Determine if fuel is getting to the carb by closing the fuel valve at the bottom of the tank. Then disconnect the fuel line at the carb. Leave the carb line disconnected and place a can or bucket under the line to catch fuel. Once the line is removed, go back and turn on the fuel valve at the bottom of the gas tank and see if fuel runs from the tank to the can. Fuel should be clear in color and run smoothly.

If the fuel runs fine, then the carb is the culprit and you'll need to clean and/or rebuild the carb with a carb kit ($20). Fairly easy to do and will take around an hour or two to complete.

If fuel does not run, then the problem most likely is in the fuel shut-off/sediment bowl unit. This unit can be removed from the bottom of the gas tank, but be ready to catch any gas that is in the tank. Once off, you will have to different screens that act as fuel filters that can clog up. There is one inside the tank that attachs to the assembly. The other one can be found above the sediment bowl. Make sure these are clean.

Hope this helps and good luck. Don't be afraid to ask questions at this forum. Everyone is here to help and wants all ford users to enjoy their tractor to the fullest.

is the tractor a front mount of side mount distributor?

6 volt or 12 volt?

Has 12-volt conversion kit installed.
Distributor is in on the side near the front. I get to it easily on the same side as the carb.

My worst nightmare started like that -- it sounded like it was cranking, and it was getting gas and spark, but no start. Turned out the ring gear was slipping on the flywheel. Are you sure the engine is actually cranking, ie., the fan is moving?

The fan spins when I'm cranking the engine. So, yes, I think it I'm okay there.

Pastor,

First of all, (no insult intended) is the switch on and the fuel valve open and gas in the tank?

Do you know for a fact that you have fuel to the carb and spark to the plugs? Pull all the spark plugs, reconnect the plug wire to #1 plug and lay it on the head. With the key on, spin the starter. There should be a "blueish" spark across the gap. Check the other 3 plugs.

If no spark, the problem is electrical.

If good spark, fuel is probably the problem. Try spraying starting fluid in the carb and see if it hits. The fuel system has 3 filters: 1 in the tank above the fuel shutoff valve, a screen in the shutoff valve just above the glass bowl, and at the fuel line elbow where it connects to the carb.

Check these and then post back with your results.

Danny
