I am new to this tractor stuff and I could use some advice. My 9N has 15" between the end of the PTO shaft and the holes on the lower lift arms of the 3 pt hitch. The book sez this dimension should be 18"-21". The mower is loading down the engine. Are longer lower lift arms available? Mine are 32" hole to hole at the centerline. 36" would be just right. Any suggestions? thanks, Paul

Paul, I too have a Woods rm306 that I use with my 871 Ford, to mow our 7 acres. Takes about five hours every two weeks. I mow in 7th gear at about 4 mph. The 306 being a flywheel driven mower does put a drag on the engine even when not cutting grass. Dull blades can also add alot of drag. As for the pto shaft causing the drag because of its length, as long as the shaft is not so long as to bind up when you hook up the mower, and slides in and out when you raise it, I don't think that is your problem. At worst you may need to shorten the shaft a few inches. I would rather do that than put on longer arms, because I would rather have the mower closer to the tracter to make easier to get around. One tip I can offer after nine years of mowing with my 306, is to purchase an impact wrench(air or electic, I use electric because it is easy and cheap) to take off the blades to sharpen, and don't forget the are left hand thread. Email me if you have any other questions. Roger Allgood

thanks smokie

the RM306 is a 3 blade 6' mower that wants 540 rpm
pto.I think the loading is a result of the pressure on the shaft due to the 15" vs 18" clearance. It loads down the engine even when it is not cutting any grass.
