Engine tapping and exhaust manifold rotten

I bought an 8N tractor two years ago and have very limited knowledge in mechanics. When I picked the 8N, the seller told me he had used JB Weld on the exhaust manifold (I believe by #4)where the manifold had either rotted out or cracked. Seller said it should hold for many years. For the most part the tractor would usually crank up without engaging the choke and had been running well. Last week the tractor would not start unless I used the choke and when it finally cranked, I heard profound tapping and it ran rough, these sounds I had never heard before and realized the JB Weld had finally given out.

Questions: Is it likely that the tapping I am hearing is being caused by the exhaust manifold now open where the JB Weld gave out or is it likely due to some other problem (i.e., needing an adjustment of some kind). If some other problem, what could it be and is there a web site that gives step by step instructions on adjusting or replacing valves, tapets or whatever may be causing the tapping.

ANY SUGGESTIONS WELCOME!!

I replaced my 2N's manifold last spring. At the time I was sure that I was about to throw a rod since the "tapping" I was hearing was so loud.

What had actually happened was that the gasket near exhaust port 4 was worn away and built up exhaust was popping out the opening. Worst yet, the exhaust gasses had worn channels into the block around exhaust port 4.

I replaced the manifold, gaskets (block and carburetor), and brass nuts. I used permatex copper sealant around exhaust port 4. The difference is amazing. The tractor runns quietly and the tapping is gone. Parts should be under 80 dollars, if I remember correctly.

Replacement is easy. Remove carb and air cleaner tube. Remove generator. Remove tailpipe. Remove manifold. (Note, the studs that hold the manifold go through the block's water jacket, so if the studs start backing out with the nuts, it is a good idea to remove the loose stud and reinstall with sealent meant for such applications). Inspect block - wire brush off rust and debris from block.

Then install manifold gasket and manifold. The nuts are suposed to torque to 40 pounds, I believe. Check that with the FO-4 manual. Careful, the brass nuts cross thread easily!

At the time I did my replacement I considered myself a novice at tractor repair. The largest engine I had worked on before that was my go-cart when I was 12. It is an easy repair.

I forget whether it was Claus or Dell who said the torque on the brass nuts should be 27 ft lbs.

Hope this helps.

You are probably right - when I did mine I did not have a torque wrench - it seems to have worked out okay, though.
