12 Volt conversion-does it still require a resistor?

My dad and I have a 48 Ford 8-N that was converted to 12 volts. We had a problem with ignition that was solved by fixing a sorry wiring job. Our question is this. We have a Delco alternator with an internal regulator. A new 12 volt coil. All new wiring. A new resistor that started smoking when the circuit was closed for a few minutes ( I assume oil used in manufacturing cooking off). My dad questions the need for the resistor, as all of the diagrams that we see online call for the use of the resistor with a 6 volt coil. Is it required?
Thanks for the input.

Richard,
The resistors function is to drop the voltage across the points. If you run at full tilt "12v" you will be changing your point very often. You may damage your coil also, when the ignition is left on and the points are closed. With this senario all the current is running through your points and coil when the key is left on and the points are closed. On some set ups they utilize the 12 volts while the starter is cranking and then drop down to say a 8v for run time. To achieve a hotter spark while cranking. This set up is ussually pulled from the starter relay. Post marked R. Hope this helps.
