When I'm finished with the *N for the day, I normally turn off the fuel supply and wait for the engine to shut down. The last time I used it, I did that, but forgot to turn off the ignition. I managed to start the tractor by jumping it, so I assume I didn't ruin the points. But, even after an afternoon of mowing, the battery didn't charge enough to restart the tractor. I'm assuming I probably need a new battery. Is there anything else I may need to replace?

Pete,
You may need a new battery. Deeply discharging a battery can sometimes kill it. Try giving it a full charge on a trickle charger. StuK

Pete,do you have an alternator or a generator? If you have an alternator you need some charge in the battery to charge it up the rest of the way.Try putting the battery charger on it or leave the jumper cables on longer. If its 6 volts and a generator you may have other problems.

I have a generator. It's the "other problems" I'm worried about.

Pete you have to put it on a charger , it might not take much of a charge at first it should go up and level off then slowly go down.If not you might need a new battery or if your battery is getting old it would be agood time to get a new one.6 volt batterys take longer to charge than 12 volt.
