Two Dead ones... NAA 8N... need help!

Two of my tractors sprang surprises on me today just as I was trying to finish a new pasture before winter. The good news is I have two more as back ups! I need some help....

The 8N: This may be the coil.. but! After a 5 to 10 minutes of running, it dies. I'm going to try the coil and the switch, but I already know I have a charging problem and had it a week before this other problem. There is not enough battery juice to turn the starter. I am not sure if it is the battery, regulator or generator and if it is related to the problem of dying. After I try the coil and the switch, how can I isolate what the charging problem is? This is an original 6V system.

The NAA: After running fine for months... I was disking the pasture and it began to lose power. It got real weak, sputtered and then died. It would restart and run for about 2 or 3 minutes, sputter and die. I swapped the carb and the coil from my other NAA... no help. I did get it restarted enough to get it back to the barn. It ran very weak... only in first gear. Now it is permanently dead. The voltage on the coil reads a little over 10Vs, but seems to have plenty of cranking power. This is a 12V system with a generator and regulator. Could it be an electrical problem? It is getting gas and, as I said, I even tried a different carb.

Sorry for being long winded.... Please help if you can!

Thanks in advance!
Patrick

THANKS to everyone... even for the thread on the dual wheel adapters... :-)

The 8N turned out to be a cracked battery cable terminal and a bad battery. Replaced the terminal and battery. Works Great!

The NAA... not so done yet. I discovered the points were fried. I Replaced the dist. cap, rotor, points and condenser. Still no spark. I took a spark plug and hooked it right to the coil primary wire... NO SPARK! I ran the same test on my other 8N with a 12V system... tons of sparks. The coil reads 10V on the input and output... same as the 8N. Do you think the coil is bad? This was a 6V coil on a 12V system. The coil actual says "No Resistor Required" and there is none! :-)

Thanks to all and to Claus for the great web site!

Patrick

The first thing I would check is the fuel flow. Both problems sound like no/low fuel flow.

My $.02 worth,

Danny,
Off the subject but have you ever seen adaptors to put dual rear wheels on an 8N? I know a person who just bought some.

I bought a pile on N parts at auction in July. In the pile was a pair of dually adaptors. Since tires and wheels are expensive, I didn't have a need for them. So, I sold them week before last to a really nice guy in MI. I wish I would have had about 20 sets of them. I had tons of replys to my ad.

On the 8N, I would first charge the battery and make sure it is in good condition. Then jumper around the key switch to rule it out or identify the culprit. It may be that the battery is too weak to run the motor. Check the voltage at the top of the coil, then check it again immediately after it dies.
I'd have to look in the archives for one of Claus or Dell's posts on troubleshooting the charging system.
On the NAA, the fact that it sputtered and then dies leads to a fuel starvation (filter in tank clogged?) or vaccuum leak problem. You should also read 12volts with points open. If you don't, then your points may have slipped and aren't opening correctly.
Hope this helps.
