Bought my NH hydraulic oil and going to change it this weekend and clean out the system a bit with kerosene.

I plan on running the 51 8N for a bit then drain it...but,

What order should I drain the 3 plugs under the tractor...just go from the front to the back in a straight order?

Thanks

Sal

I don't see anything about this in my FO-4

Sal, Start with the small plug in the rear. There a lot of fluid in there, and starting with the small plug allows for a more controlled drain. If you start with one of the large plugs, get ready for a lot of fluid coming out fast.

Sal, I am going to get up on my soap box again. You said ".....change it this weekend and clean out the system a bit with kerosene. I plan on running the 51 8N for a bit then drain it...but,..."
If you intend on running the hydraulic system for a bit with kerosene in the system, think about this for bit.

The kerosene will do a GREAT job of loosening the years of acummulated dirt, grit, sand and muck at the bottom of the three compartments (tranny, hydra, and rear end). When you "run the system for a bit" (hydraulics, tranny etc) then ALL OF THIS 'acummulated dirt, grit, sand and muck' will also be going round and round in your systems. Thru the gears, in the hydraulic pump valves and pistons, lift cylinder, etc, etc, I ask - IS THIS REALLY WHAT YOU WANT TO DO?

May I suggest an alternative. If the system has not been opened for a number of years then alot of "stuff" has accumulated. Purchase the gaskets for the two side inspection ports, two drain plugs, and the PTO shaft housing. Drain the system, remove the PTO shaft and the two inspection ports. Clean the chambers by hand from the PTO area and the inspection ports. You can use kerosene to hand flush all these areas. (IF THE ACCUMULATED STUFF IS REAL BAD, I WOULD EVEN REMOVE THE HYDRAULIC PUMP FOR CLEANING ALSO (need another gasket) I know it is a lot more work ( time and skinned knuckles) but the final results are much better and you don't have all this "stuff" running around in your system parts that you are TRYING TO PROTECT with clean lubricant.

I guess my $1 and 2cents worth, Jim

Excellent point. Thank you. You are right, I don't want to have this grunge going through my system. I will take the time and go through it 'by hand'.

Thanks again.

Sal

Very good advice Jim, couldn't agree more. I also have removed the transmission cover and rinsed the gears, pump and case from the top down using kerosene in a pump up sprayer.

You can use teflon tape on the rear 3/4" plug. The 2 bigger one's you will need gasket's.You can buy gasket material at any part's store, and make your own.My Dad used to use shoebox cardboard or cereal box to make his.Don't laugh it worked many time's.:) Hope this help's.Your friend,Jay

...do I need to pick up any type of gaskets on any of the plugs? Or should I just use some teflon tape on the threads when I put the plugs back in?

Thanks again.

DO NOT USE TEFLON TAPE AROUND THE LARGE HYDRAULIC DRAIN PLUGS!! THEY WILL BREAK!! Believe me I know from experience!

back to front works better - the differential plug is the smallest and generaly doesn't soak the mechanic as badly - those bigger plugs let a lot of fluid out quickly!
