Wonder if it would hurt a 6 volt battery like on my 4 old tractors to hook them to one of these automatic very low amp 12-volt chargers to maintain them during winter? Saw a barnful of Farmalls with 12 V trickle chargers on them, but didn't have time to see if any were original 6 volt batteries. I suspect it is not a good idea. Any experience? Thanks Mike-Iowa

That would create a (BLIVIT). Thats five pound of shucks in a two pound sack. But you can hook two 6 Volt in series and do it. Positive to negative.

It is a good idea if it is done correctly. You have to connect two 6 volt batteries in serial :

(-) 6 volts (+) ----- (-) 6 volts (+)
| |
| |
(-)----- --12 volt charger----- ---(+)

The negative cable of the charger is connected to the negative(small pole) of the left battery. The positive cable of the charger is connected to the positive(big pole)of the right battery. Of course, the positive of the left battery is connected to the neg. of the right battery(two 6 volt batteries in serial are equivalent to one 12 volt battery). By the way, be supervised if it is the first time you are charging battery, Avoid sparks, fire... around batteries because hydrogen is produced by discharging batteries and hydrogen and oxygen are produced when charging. Batteries can explode like TNT ! Moreover, do not charge a frozen battery in winter, it explodes too, splashing sulfuric acid; warm it first and charge it after.
It is possible to charge two, four, six ... 6 volt batteries as long as your battery charger sees only 12 volts. They must be connected in serial and parrallel :
(-) 6 volts (+) --- (-) 6 volts (+)
| |
(-) 6 volts (+) --- (-) 6 volts (+)
| |
| |
(-) 6 volts (+) --- (-) 6 volts (+)
| |
(-)----- --12 volt charger----- (+)

Sorry for the poor schematic
Hope it helps and play safe.

Thanks fellas: Didn't think 12 on 6 would work. But didn't think of hooking them up in serial or series, as I used them in an A John Deere many years ago. The trickle charger might let me leave batteries in tractors, but the in-serial system lets me charge two at once and use the automatic feature on the battery chargers. Thank, Mike-Iowa
