I'm stumped! As a whole the tractor runs pretty good but, just after the engine comes to rest on shutdown..... POW!!!!! ! The noise really rouses all of the dogs, and some neighbors. Any idea why this is happening?

I have a 1946 2N that backfires, but only after mowing.

And it never happened before I changed the exhaust manifold and yes, the backfire is loud!

If, however, I idle down the tractor for about 30 seconds, it generally doesn't backfire. You could also try adjusting the fuel mix - might be too rich.

Allow the engine temperature to stabilize, cool down, idle it several minutes. Make sure the engine is at a low idle when it is turned off.

When is the last time you had the head off? A collection of carbon in the cylinder could be the culprit. While the engine is running, the carbon is heated up to glowing red and therefore ignites the little bit of fuel in the cylinder after the engine is shut off. Thats my guess !Good luck!
