I have an 8N that someone converted over to 12v.
I don't think it is wired right on the switch. I have 1 wire (regulator side ) going to the switch,1wire from the charging side of the altenator to the ampmeter. 1 wire from the switch to the coil. 1 wire from the ampmeter to the somewhere on the switch. 1 wire to from the bat side of the switch to the starter. When I run the tractor and go to shut it down I have to un-plug the coil wire!!!, the switch won't shut off the motor. My guess is a bad switch, but what I need is a routing circut for the wiring of the amp meter, ing switch, alt., and coil. I will be getting a new switch so I want to do it right. Can anyone tell me the right way to wire this thing?? Thank-you ,Paul

You may not need to rewire much. It sounds like you have only one wire to the alternator. If so, then add a pig tail from the output terminal to the #2 spade terminal on the outside of the alternator. It may have a rubber plug covering it. Also add a wire from the #1 spade terminal with either a diode or an idiot light (you don't even have to put it where you can see it) in line to the switched side of the key (full 12 volts) before any resistors to the coil.
Your tractor will start to charge at lower RPMs and will shut off when you turn off the key.
There are many ways to wire a 12 volt system but that is the one that worked for me.

Hope this helps.

Paul..... ..there are many schemes for converting N's to 12 volts, some of 'em work better than others. Your switch is not bad.

Based upon what you have described, I'd recommend you put a 10 ohm 10 watt power resistor or a clearance light in the wire between the switch and the #1 terminal of the Delco 1O-S1 alternator. This will prevent the battery from feeding power back thru the alternator to the ignition coil that is connected to the ignition switch and preventing you from turning your engine off..... ..Dell

O.K. I can do that, but, what wire goes where on the switch. I want to make sure I don't have power going somewhere it shouldn't be, but also where it needs to be. I have the #1 terminal hooked to the same post as the coil wire right now. Is this correct? This is the predicament that I'm in, not knowing where what goes where.
Thanks, Paul

Paul..... ..that is correct. Connect the alternator #1 terminal thru a 10 ohm 10 watt resistor OR a rigged up clearance light used as an "idot light" to the same "ON" terminal that the ignition coil is connected to..... .Dell
