There used to be available a kit with a regulator and resistor kit to be used to convert a 3rd brush type generator with cutout to a regulator. Check with a starter/generator repair shop. Other wise a auto parts place that carries the "Standard Ignition" brand of products will have it listed in the buyers guide catalog. However, the counter person will not know what you are talking about or know where to look it up.

That electronic unit someone below linked to sure does look like a neat idea however.

The field on a single wire generator is controlled by the third brush. On a 2 brush generator the field current is controlled by the voltage regulator. I do not know what a VR950 is or what it is out of...All voltage regulators are not created equal. Even the 8N has 2 different types. The A and the B. The difference is the setting of the current coil. The A is a 11.5 amp unit and the B is a 20 amp unit.... One could use the A on a B system but the current would be limited to 11.5 amps. If one were to use a B unit on an A, and since that current coil is set to 20 amps, it could ruin the generator. 75 watts vs. 140 watts.

You cannot use a 8N VR with a single wire generator. The only thing you can do with it is use the cutout relay in the voltage regulator instead of the traditional cutout relay. This of course would not give you regulation. If you really want regulation then get yourself a 3 wire generator. There is also an outfit that has a cutout relay with a regulator built in...

the regulator i have is a 12 amp
and the generator is adjustable so i think i can make it work out but what do i do with the fld. wire?
just leave it unhooked?
