How do I crank an 8N? What do all the levers/ gauges do/ mean? I honestly have never seen one running.

You may find my answer stupid but who knows....

I hope your tractor will not start !
Until you get and read an operator's manual and
read it carefully especially SAFETY NOTICES.

May be the fact that you did'nt started it yet...
saved your life.

Tractors may be very dangerous tho whom are not
familar with them.

Thanks Joe, I guess I should buy an operators manual. And the tractor...I found an 8N in...rough...shape that I want, but I dont have I yet. But, I would like to thank everyone here for being so patient with me, and putting up with some stupid questions (and encouraging me to find another route to the field, without a 65* hill!).

I think I know what you mean. A lot of these old tractors do not have all the parts and/or the parts do not function as they should. Gauge: there is a proofmeter (on some 8N's)on the right side of the dash that looks like a speedometer,it measures the RPM's and is used to match up the speed of the engine (and depending on the gear, the ground speed) with the task the tractor is performing. The on the left is an ammeter, which measures the volts being returned to the battery by the generator. Above the proofmeter is an oil pressure gauge which measures the oil pressure in the mains of the engine. Now, the proofmeter and oil pressure meter in a modern piece of equipment function by sending units which are electrically activated, but in these old tractors, they are mechanical, i.e., there is a cable attaching the proofmeter to a gear in the front of the engine, and the oil pressure has a line running from the block to the gauge. To start, see the postings below. There is a lever on the right side that controls the hydraulic cylinder directly behind he tractor seat. This allows you to attach equipment (via the famous 3 point hitch)to the tractor, so that you can raise and lower the equipment (like a plow or disc)and that way you can control the depth of the implement. Also, that way you don't plow up or disc up the road when you are driving from one field to another.

Don't forget to turn on the gas by turning the knob on the fuel bowl (above the cyl head and below the gas tank) counter clockwise 2 turns.

Put gas in by opening the door on top of the hood near the steering wheel.

Not sure what year you have but on my 51 it needs to be out of gear (safety switch in the start button) turn on the key under the left side of the hood, right around the corner of the dash, pull the choke which is the nob on the left side of the dash, open the throttle up about 1/4 of the way- lever up by the steering wheel- and push the starter button, its the one beside the gearshifter on top of the tranny. Should start quickly, be sure to push the choke back in as soon as it starts or you may flood it. You should have a ampmeter on the dash, it will have numbers starting at 30 I beleive then some lines then 0 then some more lines and a 30 again. You should also have an oil preasure gage on the dash 0 to 50 psi I beleive and if you have a later model tractor you should also have a proofmeter which was Ford's name for a tachometer that also has a hour meter in it. For more help get a manual for you particular tractor which will give you loads of info to help you learn how to run your tractor. Good luck and have fun Greg NE
