Well here we go again. It's always something. If this thing ever works as designed 60 years ago I think it will be a sign of the End Times.

Battery was dead. It was new last July. Pulled the generator and it was completely shot. Had it completely rebuilt. Put it back on and the battery still ran down.

The guys at Batteries Plus say the battery is good.

My guess is the voltage regulator or a bad generator cable. The tractor runs and starts fine as long as I have the battery completly chaged. The ampmeter looks like it is serial number 0001. It shows no charge but it is older than dirt.

Now what?

Andy

Did you polarize the generator? If so I gotta agree that the cutout is next best guess. If you put a voltmeter on the battery you would normally expect that it would read 6 volts or so before starting the tractor and go to 7 volts or so when running. That is a better indicator than an ammeter that was around when dinosaur caca still stunk. If you get down here I have a voltmeter you can borrow, or you can get one cheap from radio shack or Northern. If it goes to 7volts it's charging, if not go with the cutout or a regulator. Ed - Illinois is real fond of a voltage regulator that looks like a cutout that he put on his tractor - they cost more than a cutout tho...
Last option - get one like my grandsons 8>)

Andy..... ...short answer, based upon what you have said, replace your regulator. They don't live forever driving across bouncy farm fields. Don't forget to "polarize" the new regular before starting. You'll have to look up polarizing instructions, I always do..... .Dell
