8N converted to 12 volt prior to my purchase is burning the ballast resistor (I think). The resistor(??) is in line between the alternator and terminal block. Tractor ran well for some time, but then burnt the first resistor and the second and the third in a short time. Tractor would seem to run fine for about 15 minutes, then sputter, and finally die. Removing the plugs showed no fire. After cooling, it would start fine and run for 15 minutes. Plugs are sooted and spark weak. Any suggestions to why the ballast resistor is burning up??

i believe the ballast resistor should be in the wire going the coil, not in alternator wire which would produce more voltage than the resistor can handle. good luck

WHEN THEY CONVERTED TO 12V AND IF THEY LEFT THE SIX VOLT COIL IN, THEY SHOULD HAVE INCREASED THE BALLAST RESISTOR. WITH THE POINTS CLOSED TRACTOR NOT RUNNING YOU SHOULD MEASURE ABOUT 3.5 VOLTS AT THE COIL FOR A SIX VOLT COIL. EXCESSIVE DWELL CAUSED BY POINT SETTING TOO SMALL COULD ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO OVERHEATING OF BALLAST RESISTOR.
