Soloniod clicks but starter does not actuate about 50% of the time when button is pressed down. Sometimes it takes 5 pushes and other times more. Many times takes off on the first try. What's going on?
Thanks
Paul with the 47 8N

What Dell said.
Additionally, if you want to check the starter relay, get a pair of water pump pliers, unisulated handles and connect the two heavy terminals on the relay. You could also use a jumper cable and connect the two terminals. If it starts now, the starter relay is defective.
Happy Motoring

Paul..... ..3 things, 1) bad battery connections, remember the 6 volt mantra, "keep 'em clean, bright, and tight". 2) your internal solenoid contacts are crudded up, get a new 3-terminal tractor solenoid. Don't get a 4-terminal automobile solenoid. 3) not clear from your description that the multiple trys meaning that the starter spins but the engine does not turn, if'n that is the case, clean your starter drive. The starter spiral drive in designed to operate "oil/greese" free..... ....Dell
