Boom capacity

I need to move some rocks that weigh up to 250 pounds. Are the booms that I see at the CT stores able to do that? Or would I be better off with a 3-point lift table? I need to set them across a small creek, that is why the boom looks appealling. Thanks!

It's not the boom - llamas

It's not the boom that limits you. A certain gentleman to the west of me demonstrates how strong they are by using one to pick up an entire 8N - all 2400 pounds of it. Boom doesn't even hardly grunt.

What limits you is how much weight you can hang on there that far back. Your steering will get light with more than 200-300# hanging at the boom tip. If you are thinking about creek crossings and such, you might want to consider other ways of moving the rocks - a rear platform or a three-point scoop would be a lot more stable.

llater,

llamas

I have a boom that I use regularly. It will do the job, but always keep in mind what that small weight way behind your tractor REALLY weighs when it's acting at the end of a fulcrum. I have a scoop also, but some of the rocks i had to move just wouldn't fit. You also didn't say how small the creek is, and if you can ford it with a rock in tow, or have to roll it down a hill. Anything more than just a TINY grade can cause you grief. Good Luck!

Phil, you might want to consider using one of those skid type buckets rather than a jib crane. We've got both and for what you're doing it almost seems like you could turn the bucket around and scoop up the rocks by backing into them & then release with the lanyard when ready. The boom is useful for loading implements into the back of a pick-up or pulling up old fence posts etc.

Hi Phil: The boom will handle the weight. I move V8 engines around with mine and I know they go heavier than 250lbs. A couple of things you need to watch out for: (1) watch the swing of the oject being moved.....too much side to side may buckle the boom, too much back and forth can also get interesting. If you can have a helper nearby that can steady the swing tendency it may help, but you have to keep an eye on them, too! (2) If you have an incline down to the creek bed, you don't want your front wheels higher than your back ones with a load extended on the boom, so watch your approach to the creek very carefully.

Other than that, go for it. If your hydraulics are in decent shape you can gently place the boulders anywhere you want them with a little practice.

Good luck..... ..Ed

The booms are strong enough to do the job. Beware of the swinging action of a load hanging like that, it can be exciting. The N's are light tractors, so it doesn't take much to get the front end very light, or even off the ground. The further out on the boom you hitch, the greater the effect.
