I just bought a 1946? 8N. It needs a piston, and it needs to be re-wired, but nothing major. I'm not sure of the year, because the serial number has been painted over. It needs a piston, re- wiring, paint, tire tubes, and a weld on a place on the 3 point, but it has a functioning Sherman Combination transmission. The gentleman we got it from explained the controls as best he could, but neither of us really knew a whole lot about it. This looks like a fun restoration project...I just need a trailer to go get it...

I would scrape off the paint to see the serial number. If it is an 8N, then the year has to be at least a 48..... Also the star or the diamond tells you what size the sleeve is, (in some cases when it has not been rebuilt) Older models have the .040 steel sleeves and later units have the .090 CI sleeves. It is best to disassemble and taking a peek before ordering the sleeve..
The link below will help you identify your tractor.
Happy Motoring

Well, thanks for the link. It is definately an 8N body/ wheels. It doesnt have the proof meter, and the serial number has been painted over several times. I guess some aircraft stripper is in order here...

It was my best effort at sounding excited for you, which I am, especially since you are of the frame of mind that all that engine work is nothing major.

Good Luck

Well, I have some questions. Would someone with a digital camera be kind enough to take a picture of the PTO area of their tractor, so I can see if there are any type of PTO guards that should be there?

Can't you just run with the PTO Disengaged? The back end will just be lowered. (Sorry don't know the name of the back end) Just a 5 acre tractor man.

unfortunately, the N-Tractor was built innna the days of "before OSHA" and there were no idiotproof PTO shields. Most N's have a screw-on "cap" that covers the PTO when not in use. I have seen PTO shields in factory accessory brochures but I have never seen 'em innna real world. I have seen homemade cobbled up PTO shields that didn't leave me with a warm and fuzzy..... ....Dell

We had a one row Woods Bros. corn picker that we pulled with an 8N. It required a bolt on PTO extension with a shield over it. The corn picker had a telescoping shield that fastened to the tractor PTO extension after connecting the PTO shaft from the picker. Ours was functional and dad always made sure that I put it on.
