My N has a Sherman transmission in it, but I'm not sure what type. The lever has 3 positions, so I'm assuming it's a combination. Now, would I be correct in saying that the forward- most position on the sherman lever is step up, middle is regular 8N speed, and rear most is step down?

Could be with under, direct, over or direct and over or could be under and direct, direct and over positions, foward-direct, center-netrual, rear- over

Both Chrisr and Dell are giving you the same correct information. One additional note: The pto in these old Fords is transmission driven. You need to use direct drive to obtain the correct pto speed--about 735 rpm--to operate brush hogs and other mowers, and most any implement the little Ford has power to operate. Mik

when the lever is all the way forward (toward front of tractor)it is the low side. all the way back is the Hi side. When the lever is half way inbetween you should be able to pull it out from the case about 1 inch and then back. That would be like the sherman wasn't there. Hope this helps

The so-called 3-speed Sherman combo Aux tranny with the dogleg shifter lever shift pattern is: forward = lowrange (underdrive), neutral, aft = highrange (overdrive) and direct drive is neutral and pulled out to the left about 3/4" and then back.

You might find it interesting that stepdown 2nd is slower than 1st and step up 1st is faster than 2nd.

I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I'd had my 8N with Sherman combo 3 yrs before I found out the "secret" 3rd speed, direct drive. I read about it in the N-Newsletter..... .Dell

Ok, so forward is step down, back is step up, and center is regular 8N speeds, and center+out+ back is what? Also (warning, dumb question ahead), do I have to mash in the clutch to shift the Sherman?

center is NEUTRAL..... ."center+out+back" is DIRECT drive as if'n the Sherman wasn't even there. And yes, you must disconnect the engine from the gearboxs by stomppin' down the clutch peddle with'n yer clodhoppers inorder to change gears without grinding a pound. That means eather the Sherman, or the main 4-speed tranny or the PTO..... ..Dell

So, center on the sherman will put the tractor out of gear, even if the regular transmission is in gear? Sorry for all the annoying questions, but my N is sitting a few miles away, waiting on a trailer, so I cant find out myself.
