Let me first say I havent purchased any manuals yet (havent even gotten a trailer to get my N home), and that is why some of these questions may seem stupid. Now- My steering is 'loose', as in, if one of the steering wheel braces is in the 12 o'clock position, it's in the 3 o'clock position before the front wheels even start to turn. Now, I'm sure this is my steering box. Do I just need to adjust it, or rebuild it? Will it hurt the tractor to be run like this?

Now, the 3 point question. On the top of the right (if you're facing the tractor from the rear) lift arm, there is a crank handle type thing. What does it do?

The N's were designed as a "tillage" tractor. And plowing is the first step in planting any crop to be tilled. When the N was designed, most plows pulled by tractors had their own wheels. With the Ferguson 3pt hitch on the N's, the tractor provided the wheels for the plow. When plowing, one set of wheels are in the furrow and the other is up on unplowed ground. This means the tractor is tilted and the 3pt hitch tilts also. But the plow bottom should be level. So they made the right side lift arm link adjustable so it could be shortened to make the plow run flat in the ground.

As jp said, it can also be used with other implements like the rear blade to provide "pitch" to a road, etc.

Regards,
Larry

I use the crank (I think it's called the leveling crank) on the right arm of the 3point to level or unlevel the implement I have attached. Lately, it has been the rear blade I grade my gravel driveway with. The crank allows the operator to adjust grade (sideslope) of whatever it is that your grading. It's very handy.

Hope that helps

The crank is part of the leveling box... This evens out the 2 lift arms...
You need to be more specific in your steering problem. Do the steering arms turn when you turn the wheel or do they have slop. Does the steering wheel move in a vertical direction when turning the wheel? A lot of things can cause poor steering. I suggest you get yourself the Ford IT-FO4 manual....
Happy Motoring
