I live in the Pacific NW, and with the advent of cooler weather, my 9N has picked up a knock in the engine. I just finished overhauling the carb, tuned the ignition, and gave it the semi-annual oil change. The tractor had not been run for about a month after being used weekly all summer. It is in the mid-30's to mid-50's now.

The knock is very loud, and sounds like it's coming from the #2 cylinder area. There has been no change in oil pressure, and it still runs around 40 psi cold. The gage is new this year, so I think it is close to true. I tried 5W-30, hoping to get a little more pump-ability with the thinner cold oil. No luck. Still knocks. I only run it for 30 seconds at a time.

Does anyone have any suggestions, shy of a rebuild? Compression is within spec, and it runs like a dream otherwise. The knock appeared suddenly, the first time she was started after sitting for a month in the barn.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Remove head and turn crank. See if a sleeve is loose and moving in the block. That's where mine was.

While you have the head off also check the deck height. Roll the crank and bring each piston to TDC, measure from deck to piston. Could have been a leaky headgasket and bent a rod or damaged a wristpin or piston from hydraulic lock.....Big Mike

Adam, before you tear down your engine, first pull the head off and check for carbon. I had an engine knock in by 8n and I just jumped in and tore down the engine. I couldn't find anything wrong except for some carbon on the top of the piston. I mow weekly with mine, and it runs a steady rpm. If I had only pulled the head first, I would have saved alot of work. I now load the engine down from time to time to rid it of any carbon. Terry.

A mechanics stethescope will help you figure it out.....I'd be willing to bet that it is actually a leak in your exhaust manifold.....ususally knocks develope over a period of time....start it cold, and feel aound the manifold for a leak...

Take Care
Steve
