12 volt benefits?

My guess as to the reasons to convert to 12 volt systems are these:

1 Regulated (alternator) charging system.
2 More power to start.
3 Lights, and other accessories are easier to get.
4 Battery interchangeability with your car when the battery's dead. :)

Any others? Any drawbacks?
Thanks, this is a great informational resource!

Andy..... ...heres the real reason most convert to 12 volts. 12 volts onnna 6 volt starter really spins the engine for starting tired engines eazier. A momentarily boost of 12 volts does not hurt the rugged 6 volt starter.

The 12 volt alternator with solid state regulator is definately much kinder on batterys than the old mechanical regulator. But the "1-wire" alternator, as attractive as that might seem, does not work well on our slow rpm tractor engines, use the 3-terminal Delco SI-10 instead.

Here's the problem, the 12 volt conversion is not standardized and is often times done by the "electrically challenged". And guess what? it gets mucked up.

I'm a 12 volt advocate for the right reasons, that said, I haven't found the right reason for my eazy starting 6 volt 52 8N and I know how to do it right..... ...Dell

Another option for using a single wire 12V alternator is to have a qualified electrical shop put in a new regulator in the alternator to make it "kick in" at a lower rpm. I recently had mine reworked and it now starts charging at 2000 rpms instead of the 3700 rpms it took before. Which means it appears to be charging w/o me having to run the tractor wide open to get the rpms up. (cost me $35.00)

For what its worth!

I would say your list is right on the money. Unfortunately most owners include,"will fix yet unidentified problems with 6 volt system" on their list as well.

As a reminder to all those reading this message, a proper working 6 volt system is as reliable today as it was when it was made. A 12 volt conversion will not correct electrical problems, it will only mask them until later.

Andy,

You pretty much have it down.

I have two Ns (8N and Jubilee) that are 6V and 2 (again an 8N and Jubilee) that are 12V. I keep the 6V for originality, but they are much more difficult in terms of keeping the batteries charged.

One 6V 8N seems to eat batteries. I haven't quite figured this out yet.

Best of Luck!
