need a new 12 volt battery for my converted 9n, but just got back from Walmart and was inundated. I wasn't sure whether I should go for the higher 'cold cranking amps' or for the lower. I seem to feel that the lower would be better for that original 6v starter, but wasn't sure enough to put $30 on the line. What do you think? As #5 says "need input". Thanks..Ron

Ron, I saw the reply by Dell and Chuck. I think $$$$$ may play a big difference in your choice, it would mine. I like Chuck's answer, go with the the best battery you can get from a discount store like Walmart, etc.
Measure the battery holder-measure the battery you want to buy. Try to buy the most expensive one in the store(usually you get what you pay for). When it quits working, take it back and see what trade-in you get.(BE SURE AND SAVE THE PURCHASE RECEIPT). This has worked for me.
Good luck.

Ron, I have an Interstate 12V in my 8N. It fits the hole exactly and if I remember it cost $59. The date code says I installed it in June 1994. No problems to date. I have found that cheap (i.e. Pep Boys, Walmart,...) batteries behave that way. I have rarely gotten 3 years out of bargain batteries. Usually 7+ years out of good ones in my cars/boats/tractors.

Thanks for all the information. I agree that you get what you pay for especially in batteries, but the problem that I am concerned with is will a 12v battery of a high 'cold starting amps' rating tend to cause any significent problems for a very old 6v starter as opposed to a 12v battery with a low 'cold starting amp' rating and does it really make any difference. My primary concern is not only does it effect the starter, but does it create any more tork in the starter that might damage the flywheel. I don't have any information available as to the 'cold starting amps' that was recommended on the original 6v battery. My thinking is that the lower 'cold starting amps' rating would probably be safer.

The only thing the higher cold cranking amp battery will do is make it longer before you run for the jumper cables.

Ron..... .The cold starting rating has to do with chemistry of battery, not the starter. Basically, battery will supply just what starter demands, no more.

This is to say if'n starter demands 50 amps and battery can supply 1000 amps at 12 volts, battery just gonna supply 50 amps at 12 volts.

Howsomever.....if'n starter demands 50 amps and battery can only supply 40 amps at 12 volts, the chemistry is gonna tell the battery supply 50 amps at 11 volts.

This is a known phenomenom of batterys and chemical reactions with respect to tempature.

Which is why there are "ballast resistor" schemes to temporarially increase the sparkies on cold starts..... ...Dell

Thanks again for the info. Y'know, I've had this 9n for 10 years and never realized that so much information was available and that so many knowledgeable people were willing to help with answers. I'm secure in the knowledge that anytime I have any problem with this old girl, if I explain it correctly, someone on this site will have the answer. Believe it or not, it sorta makes her more desireable.....I'm still talking about my tractor, y'know...Ron

Ron..... .Heres what I think I know about batterys. The "high cold cranking AMPS" type batterys get that way because they make the plates thiner. Thin plates are not very strong. Tractors don't spend all their life on smooth highways. Weak plates don't last very long bouncing across the pasture brushoggin'.

Now heres what I'd do, don't laff. I'd go to the John Deere dealer and get their yellow top 12 volt battery that fits the battery hole of your N-Tractor.

And heres why, couple of months ago, my 95 Dodge dual battery Cummins Diesel needed new batterys. Dodge Dealer wanted $145 each and none in stock. Checked on the internet, found out Optima redtop's were the best $165. No one had the size 27 in stock.

Somebody said checkout the yellowtop Champions at the John Deere dealer, $65. Better'n Sears Diehards and more rugged, built for rough travelin' tractors, has special plate dividers. And that what I bought, besides you can actually check the water innna them..... ...Dell

Sorry to inform you Dell, but Exide makes the Diehard for Sears, AND the John Deere batteries. If you want a good battery, buy an Interstate or an AC Delco. They are rated the top 2.

Thanks, Dell. I thought I knew a lot about batteries, but I did not know about the yellow top champions. Guess maybe because there is not a John Deer dealer nearby. I sometimes recommend marine batteries for tractors because they handle long periods of not being used and deep discharge much better than "regular" batteries. Sorta depends on how often you crank it up. For a tractor, tougher is certainly better. I am gonna look for those yellow top champions.
