I was thinking. Would it be correct for me to use IH Red on the belly of my N? We're re-painting the Farmall, and I really like the red. It's a nice dark, yet bright shade. Would this be correct, or would I get laughed at at shows?

I use the same paint as the Fords are painted on the Smiths Page which is Dupont Centari. The Ford reds you see that are too orange are the cheap inferior paints. The Centari is about $130 a gallon and primer is about the same. Spend some more and use hardner. I have Centari in Ford red and Farmall red. They are very close in color with the Farmall just a shade darker. They are so close nobody will ever know the difference. I think more important than the correct color is to use a high quality paint and not the cheap paints that will change color with a little exposure. I can't stress this enough. Why go through all the work involved and then put junk on it?-----Michael

The Tisco Ford red is too orangy, the Tisco MF Red is too funky orangy also, the John Smith DuPont Centarri Red is the closest and my local automotive supply can get it for $135.00/gal. The guy matched the color codes for me so if any one needs this info...feel free to email me...but the guy also pulled a can of DuroColor 1704 GM RED off the shelf and it is a close match for touch up or going the cheap route...I tried a TSC farm tractor and implement brand made by Valspar called Ford New Holland Red and it comes close also-it does not match NH but leans more towards the redbelly vermillion. Lately, I have been looking at Rustoleum Safety Red and it may be close... The Tisco Ford Medium Gray works for me, of course I haven't got that far as I spend all my time looking at red things-stop signs, red lights, fire hydrants, etc....

For what it's worth, I used Tisco paint on my 8N and the red they recommended is labeled IH red. I like it because it's not orange tinted. The gray is Tisco's "Ford Medium Gray". You can see it at the link below, although the sun glare causes it to look a little different in the picture, especially the gray, which has the beige tint. Don't have the paint numbers with me but if you would like them email me and I'll look them up.

mag, this is your tractor!if you want it original for shows, then paint it original. if you want it to be pleasing to your eye, then paint it any colour you want.
so what if people laugh.as posted earlier, they are jelous.
here is a for example,,,,,
2 years ago i needed another chicken coupe. i built 6 foot walls and put a truck cap on the top for a roof. some of my neighbours laughed and had some smart remarks to make, like,it looks like a space ship to me, and , are you moonlighting for nasa?
it was all in fun and didnt bother me in the least.even the wife joined in on the fun.
after 2 winters of the water not freezing and the chickens being quite content, i am happy with my design.the windows allow sun in all year round, and it acts as a green house to keep it warm in the winter.
now there are 3 of these 'space ship' chicken coupes on our road.i have built 3 for the same people who laughed at me.so.....who is laughting now?
the morrow of this story is, people have differant thoughts on what works and what doesnt.most of all its your tractor...enjoy it and have fun.

why even you chose to paint the IH IH red why did you not paint the iH ford red dude. ford later red is ugly in color like it's orange and not red but the early red is real red. paint it red not IH red. no you chose ih red for your ih tracotr because you did it right. you didn't ask for ford red when you were looking to buy paint for your ih did you? no, you asked for IH red. for your ih red tractor. do it the same way for your ford 8n. don't ask for IH 8N red! ask for early ford red for your american 8n. life is short to even think about doing it wrong. it may be over tomorrow when the terrorists blow up the sanfancisco bridges. so why live now and even think about ih red for your red ford 8n and then be done with it knowing you did it wrong man. i vote to use ford 8n red or corssfire like the bg did. but his is not right either. he chose crossfire. do you think henry ford asked his painters to use crossfire? no he did not. he made the trctors red because he liked red not because he hunted with a scope and saw red. he wanted red tractors look like red tracotrs. i bet he didn't go the harvester people and say can i borrow a can of your red to paint my tracotr and do you have a can of crossfire too? no he didn't he told his painters to find a red for his tractors. I dare say that you will be glad for my advice and paint it right the first itme because henry ford did and our lives are very short.

i just dont like the idea of using anything but ford red for a ford tractor. crossfire schmaltzfire henry did not use crossfire he used red. he din't go to the men at IH and ask for their paint he used HIS paint. I am a tradionalist and I believe in using RED.

8N Ford "red" was called "vermilion", but who knows exactly what color vermilion really is? Any red fades, some faster than others. Personally, I think the Centuri would be my choice because of the paint color stability. To me, the only time color really matters is when you are trying to match what is already faded on the tractor. BTW use the best quality paint you can afford, its one of the few things you get what you pay for, BUT preparation is EVERYTHING..... .Dell

I could tell you that paint it the way you like but that is not answering your question. We all do things we wannt to do. To answer your question one must know what the end result that you desire is. This hobby (to some of us and basic necessity to others) can take many forms. If your desire lies in going to shows where tractors are judged on origninality, then if the judges think that your color does not match their conception of original then you would loose points. That is why they make $80.00 harnesses that use old fashioned cloth and varnished wires. (Mine like most is pvc but then I do not take my tractor to shows.) One ribbed tires, leather boots on tie rod ends, cad plated, nuts where they are supposed to be used,,, and the list goes on and on. If this is your intent, then go for it... As I said, in the end you are going to do what you want... P.S. I do not think any one will laugh at your tractor.

Well, it depends on the type of show... If it is a PC Show, then everybody who shows up wins. Again, it depends on what you desired end result is.

8N red is as unique as 8N gray, its almost orange. I would go th the New Holand Dealer and buy a quart of 8N red it's less than $12.

If you go to all the trouble to prep the machine why paint it the wrong color? Just my thoughts, thanks for listening.

8N red is not orangish, paint NH sells and claims is correct for the 8N is orangish and actually is the '58 and up reds. If you want the right color go to John Smiths site and use his centari paint it is as close as you can get! If you do not want to go the long dollar for paint buy a small sample for about $5 and take it elsewhere and have it color matched with a machine enamel or what ever you wish.
