Stiff steering

My '51 8N's steering has started getting stiff. It's worse turning to the left. It also squeaks when turning to the left. The squeak sounds like it's coming from where the column goes through the instrument panel. I've pulled a 6' finish mower all summer without a problem. It seems to have started when the weather cooled down, but it hasn't been that cold. The engine and transmission both have oil and the steering gearbox doesn't look like it's ever been modified with grease zerks. Any ideas?

I had this same problem with my 51 8N.
I had to remove the stearing box and put it on the bench. Removed both sides of the stearing box and dissasembled. If you aren't real handy, don't attempt this. There was a worn out top bearing that is above the gear oil level. It was self destructing and getting metal filling into the rest of the box, not good. There was a plastic bushing for the replacement at one tractor supply place, and he swore that was all there was now days as a replacement. I looked arround and found a metal one and used that. Steering works like new now. I am considering the greese fitting idea instead of the oil bath.

Good luck and let me know how you make out.
Norman

There's a bearing above the sector gears that doesn't get any lube. It tends to fall apart. Mine fell apart and got the pieces jammed into the sector gears. The BEST thing to do is take the steering box apart and replace both steering shaft gears(don't use the nylon ones, get the real deal)and fill the steering box with oil or pack it with grease. Some guys use a combine header lube which is somewhere between 80/90 and bearing grease in consistency. If you don't want to take it apart right now, fill the thing with gear oil and hope it lasts a while longer.

I've had the same problem on my NAA. Remove the bolt on the steering wheel hub that holds it to the the steering column. Try putting some oil down the open column and then working the steering back and forth while you're driving it. This happened to me several years ago out of the blue, I did this, and it hasn't ocurred since. Not sure why? There is a bearing in there (I believe?) but I've never replaced it. You might wind up doing that.

Hi SK,
A little oil in the right spot should fix the squeak, assuming it is not related to the stiff steering.
If everything is well greased and you don't find any excess wear or play, check the air pressure in the front, especially the left. Low pressure makes a lot of difference.
Good Luck
