I just finished doing a total rebuild on my 9N engine. There is one thing that puzzles me about it.

Looking at the front of my distributor, the terminals are numbered as follows:

upper left - 1
lower left - 2
lower right - 3
upper right - 4

My problem is that in the FO-4 manual it says the firing order is 1-2-4-3 Dist turns CCW

If I wire the distributor like that (lower right going to plug number 4, upper right to plug 3) the engine runs like a dog, cant adjust the carb screws correctly and the engine backfires bad.

If I wire it 1-2-3-4 (upper right to plug 4) it runs great. I can adjust the carb correctly, it idles good.

Could I have some weird cam thing going on? I am assuming that plug number 1 is closest to the radiator and plug 4 is closest to the dash panel.

I know that if it aint broke dont fix it but this is bugging me. Maybe it is only running on 2 cylinders? Can anyone help? I am perplexed. Thanks in advance.

Joe

Bob,

Thanks for the reply.

I am looking at that picture. If I wire it up the way it is shown, it runs like a dog. It runs good with the wiring going 1-2-3-4 what am I doing wrong. Also, fig. FO71 does not show the plugs. Which one is #1? I assume #1 is closest to the radiator.

Maybe my timing is off and by wiring it up wrong and masking another problem.

I am pretty much stumped at this point.

Joe..... .the molded numbers on the distributor cap are indeed the cylinder number to which the the copper core sparkplug wire is connected to. And indeed looking at the frontmount distributor picture FO71, the cap numbers do go CCW. 1,2,4,3 The #1 cylinder sparkie is closest to the radiator.

And believe it or not, the N-Engine is "so good" that it will run on 2 cylinders, which is the equivalent of 1,2,4,3 CW or since the distributor must turn CCW, the incorrect firing order of 1,3,4,2 CCW causes the N-Engine to run on 2 cylinders. Which is exactually what you are reporting.

So bottom line, wire it up like it shows in FO71..... ..Dell
