I am about to replace the clutch in my trusty 9N and I am wondering what to use to align the clutch disk when I install the new one. Can I just eyeball it or is there a source for a dummy mainshaft so I can get it in correct alignment? Thanks for any help. Rick M

Thanks everyone for all the great tips. I now how the 9N apart and it looks like I better replace both the tranny main seal and the main seal on the motor, both look like they are leaking. Any tips on doing this as the 2 manuals I have for this tractor are very basic and don't cover this. Thanks again, Rick

Rick..... .If'n it was me, I'd unbolt the tranny input shaft (doesn't affect bearing preloads) and use that to align the clutch AND THEN I'd replace the well worn, hardend tranny front main seal on the tranny input shaft while I had the tractor apart. Front tranny seal 8N7052A, $3 cheep..... ...Dell

From an old shadetree mechanic. Find a socket that will fit in the pilot bearing (or use some duct tape to make it fit) then put an extension on the socket and it works as a good home-made alignment tool.

This is from an old Kentucky farmboy.

Rick, you can also remove and use your transmission input shaft. Easy, and works like a charm. Hope this helps.

Like Tom, I used eyeball. I did have some trouble getting everything aligned until I hit on the idea of turning the PTO until the transmission shaft spines mated with the clutch - piece of cake after that.

I replaced my clutch this year in my 2N. I eyeballed it. Before I was done, a friend brought over his clutch alignment tool and it slid right in. My initial placement was real good. I dont know if I was just lucky or if i'm really that good, but I know it can be done. The tool, in my opinion is just an aid.
