My 9n wont start. I put in a new carb, new points, rotor, condenser. I don't know if the coil is shot. I don't know if it has been changed to 12 volts. How do I tell? What am I doing wrong?

Aponte..... ...I don't know what your tractor mechanicing ablility is, I flunked mindreading, just ask my ex-wife of 32 yrs. But I get real nervous when you can't even tell if you have a 6 volt or 12 volt battery.

Unfortunately, there is no eazy shadetree mechanics test for bad 9N frontmount ignition coil except by replacement. But based upon your very vague description of your problem and what you have done..... .I guess...change your ignition coil..... ...Dell

Are you getting a spark when you take out a plug and lay it on the head? If not, it may be the coil. It may be the ignition switch. It may be the resistor.

What voltage is the battery? If 12 volts, my guess would be a 12 volt conversion. Other tell-tale signs would be the original 6 volt generator (about the size of a coffee can) replaced with an alternator (looking more like it came out of a car).

Troubleshooting will require that you take voltage reaings across the battery terminals, on both sides of the resistor, ignition switch, and top of the coil, with points open and closed.

Three words needed when trouble shooting

LOCALIZE ---

ISOLATE ---

LOCATE --

Usually only ONE part causes the problem !

In a TV , which has hundreds of parts --When something goes wrong , I never started at the power cord and replaced every part in the set . One or two parts usually solved the problem .

Dan..... .you are very correct.

But you see, most people don't try to repair their own T.V's. Instead they haul it into the shop and eather say it donna work or all I got is a floppy pix or nuthin but snowy pixs. They don't come in and say I replaced the hydrogloger but the frimfram can't be the problem because it was working before I let the smoke out. And inaddition, you invested many years of electronics study to be able to "localize, isolate, and locate" the failed parts.

If'n most N-Tractor owners would just take the time to even read the I&T FO-4 Repair Manual, most of their questions would be obviously answered..... ....respectfully, Dell

Start with LOCALIZE -- Is it fuel or ignition ? -- If fuel -- carb or line ? flow yes/no ?

And so on . That is ISOLATE .--
