My 8N is a 1948. They did not have a black knob on the shifter. Does anyone have an idea to put one on short of cutting off the shifter? Thank you.

How about drilling out the shift knob until it fits on the shifter. Then put a bunch of epoxy, like J B Weld, into the hole in the knob and stick it on the shifter.

If you ever need to get it off, a chisel would probably work.

Go to the boneyard and get a later model shifter and swap it out. You could also grind the knob off the current shifter and thread the shaft for the knob, but it would easier to swap it out.

No offense "bg", but why bother? Just leave the ball on and use it that way.

If I understand John Smith's page correctly, there should be a cast knob on the shifter, and it's a part of the shift lever. They didnt put plastic ones on them until 1950. I'm not sure, so hopefully someone who knows more than me can answer your question definately.
