Ok, I have yet another question. On the left rear axle housing of my 8N is the number 8N-4D1282. Can anyone tell me what this means? Is it just a part number, or does it bear some significance as to when my N may have been manufactured?

Thanks,
68 Mag

Something is not right - OR at least it does not match up with my parts books (original 1949 copy).

The LH axle trumpet part number for an 8N is 8N 4011-A. Howver the RH axle trumpet for the 9N and 2N is 4012, precisely 9N 4012-B and 2N 4012-A2 respectively. I can see the 0 looking like a D, and the B looking like an 8, but the 8N beginning is what has me thrown.

Take a look at my Photopoint album linked below and see if that helps you.

Regards,
Larry

Look at the starter housing - there should be a casting date in the form of a letter and numbers.

If memory serves the letter equates to a month (jan=A, feb=B, etc), the next two numbers the date, and the final number the last digit of the year it was cast.

Since engines were often swapped between tractors, this is generally a better way to date your tractor.

I also belive that the same sort of casting ID is located on the rear axle, right side, facing forward.
