Found the cause of stuck clutch!!

Finally decided to split the tractor the other day. was a whole lot easier than I thought it would be, took about an hour. After I opened it up I inspected everything, it all looked pretty clean, all the linkage from the clutch pedal were fine. After I removed the clutch assembly from the flywheel, I spotted the cause of my stuck clutch.

One of the cotter pins that holds in one of the pins on one of the little arms (that disengage the clutch) in the clutch assembly had broken. This had allowed the pin to slide out, and with it, all the little needle bearings. Thus, one of the three levers in the clutch was left non-functioning.

Now I am wondering what to do about replacement. I dont' want to buy a whole new clutch assembly. I found nine of the nineteen needle bearings in the bottom of the clutch case. Would I be able to take them to a bearing place and get them to get another ten for me? Can you buy just one of the lever assemblies separately? Any Ideas?

If I split my tractor, I would put in a new clutch, (pressure plate & disk) throw out bearing and resurface the flywheel. Now your good for many years. I may be doing it soon cause my 8N is stuck. I haven't gotten' around to trying to unstick it yet. But I was glad to read your post. It's one more cause I was not thinking of. I tend to think mine is stuck from oil on the disk since she leaks pretty good. I was going to pull the starter and see if I could free it up through the hole. Good luck.

I agree with all the responses, and add; replace the pilot bearing, put in a new trans mainshaft oil seal (you will have to remove the mainshaft anyhow to use as a clutch alignment tool), inspect / renew the ring gear, and grind out the starter hole (if it hasn't already been ground out) for easier starter removal in the future. My $.02

Nzer,
I agree with both Jeff and Michael. Replace it.
Peace of mind goes a long way, and I'd hate for something else to go wrong at 9:30 pm when you are in the middle of a snow bank (grin).

Don's got pressure plates for about $65.00, and you get $20.00 back for the core.

Ebay has one going right now. I put a link to it below.

I say go with the new clutch. That one has been in there a long time and it has "failed" at this point. Which ever path you choose I would suggest using NEW fasteners for the clutch plate. The old ones, having been torqued / stretched once(?) already, will be a pain in the posterior to get out if it breaks off in the flywheel.... been there and done that.... it's no fun trying to drill out a Grade 8...

Clutchs are not that expensive. I would go ahead and put in a new on to keep from having to split the tractor again. If you figure our your time, it is cheap insurance!
