I just finished a major rebuild on my 9N. It seems to be running perfectly but, When I first start it up, it sounds really good. Then after about 5 minutes while the engine is still cold to the touch, I am hearing a clicking noise from the valve lifter area under the covers. I adjusted the valve lash as per the FO-4 manual with the engine stone cold. set the intake clearance to .011 and the exhausts to .015, I used a feeler guage and was very careful and double checked them after rotating the engine a couple of times.

Here is the question, Are these things supposed to make any noise. I never heard one that was running "right". I have new adjustable lifters and a new valve train with new rotators on the exhaust stems. I had to lap the ends of the valve stems when I did the work to obtain the .0005 clearance specified in the manual.

Did my rotators break in? Is the manual correct for these clearances? I would hate to have to pop the head again if I dont have to.

What do you guys think, do I have any thing to worry about? Am I damaging anything by running it like it is?

Joe

Clicking noise is better than no noise.. All solid lifters will click a little... However, if the lash is overly loose, then the noise increases. Valves on the loose side will not harm the engine. Now overly tight ones will burn the valves. The valve needs to make a good physical contact with the valve seat to dissipate the heat. I would run the engine for a few hours and then readjust them..

Thanks Claus,

That is what I figured. The old ones didnt close and burnt so bad they trashed the seats too. I guess I will put the old girl to bed for the winter and give it the once over next spring before the parade / show season gets going. Thanks again, I feel better.
