6 volt wiring question

"If ya gotta fix it, fix it right the first time." These immortal words came to me as I worked on the Super A the other day. So, I got to thinking. I want to show my 8N, so it would need to be the original 6 volt system. Then I realized something- "If ya gotta fix it (12 volt mess), fix it right the first time." So, instead of fighting with this 12 volt junk on it, I'm gonna go ahead and switch back to 6 volt. I've seen the diagrams on Nseries.com, I've read the archives, and I still have a question. I realize all 12 volt perversions are different, so how can I tell what parts have been replaced with 12 volt parts? Will I need any special tools?

Thanks,

68 Mag

That a boy 68 Mag. I like to see people get off the bandwagon (or not jump on) and go with the 6 volt system. If everything is functioning properly, 6 volt will always work. Anyway, check the coil to see what voltage it is, the lights, the coil resistor, and the solenoid. You will have to get a voltage regulator and generator. There are 12 volt starts available for the 8N, so make sure your starter is still 6 volt. Should be a pretty easy job.

In addition to what Jack has stated, you also might want to think about changing the starter solenoid. Also - your headlights are probably 12 volt - they will need to be changed back to 6 volt.

My 12 volt conversion came with an Alternator, new belt, new wiring harness, extra ballast resistor and a 12 volt coil. I changed out all these and removed the 6 volt regulator and the bracket that was used to tighten the belt on the 6 volt generator. Now as you say - 12 volt conversions are different so yours may be different than mine.
