12 Alternator; is there one that will fit better?!

My 9N has been coverted to 12V (prior owner) and electrically it works fine. Problem is, it uses a common GM alternator, which is larger in diameter than the original generator. There is no where I can seem to mount it where it doesn't either rub the belt against the bottom of the distributor cap (front mount) or get whacked by the front axle when running on rough ground. I've played with different belt lengths and what not, but to no avail. Is there a recommended aftermarket alternator that is a little smaller in diameter that still has the internal regulator,etc? My current one has a cracked casting from my last logging foray.

Are you finally replacing your alternator, or decided since it doesn't work, you're just taking it off? :-)

That leads to one of the great mysteries of life--How long will an 8N run without an alternator or generator? (Measurement can be in hours or cans of Coors light)

Paul, What do you have for a bottom mount? Maybe you can adjust that so you can use a shorter belt.
I lost the photo of mine to a software crash. Where are you in NY? IM in the hills of Boston, NY.

Bottom mount on my unit is strictly homebrew. Two "c"'s back to back. Don't have a picture. I did put on a shorter belt. Shortest that would still allow the belt to clear the dist cap on the bottom side. If I lengthen the bottom support, I cut into the sheetmetal support for the hood. Does the conversion to 12V necessitate cutting away sheetmetal?

Paul, I found a old photo of my front end before I started painting it maybe it will help. You should not have to cut sheet metal. My belt is 47 inches long. I turned the back plate on the water pump over and fastened the top alternator bracket to the nut on that plate. I added extra weld to the nut on that plate. This was a sugestion of one of the other guys here.

I tried to add that my bottom mount is two pieces of flat stock with the holes about 2 to 2 1/2 inches apart. When I used my back browser it skipped right over my Re: Re: Re:. I also have noticed that I have not been getting the email notice when someone replys to my post.

Had the same problem with the Delco Alternator on my 9N. The fan on the alternator would hit the tie-rod in rough situations. I found a small 50Amp alternator in a salvage yard with the fan inside the case. It works fine. I don,t know what it was on originally, but it is made in Korea. It could be from a Hunda . If anyone is interested I could get the name and number for them. The wire hook-up is the same as the GM Delco. The pulley worked fine. I am really happy with it. Henry likes it also. Hope this helps.

I would like to know the numbers to the alternator that richard m. kay posted on nov. 17,2001. I am having trouble with the belt rubbing the bottom of the dist. and the alternator being to big. Any help would be appreciated.

The alternator that I put on my 9N is Mando #AB150017 made by Mando Machinery Co. Korea The wiring hookup is same as the GM Delco. It is a lot smaller and has an internal fan. It is 50 Amp. I bought it from an auto salvage yard. they didn't know what it was on originally. Hope this helps. Thanks to all the N'rs on the board.
