I have had my clutch fastened down for three weeks with no release. Am going to split the 8N tomorrow to get it unfrozen. I would appreciate any tricks, shortcuts, or advice. Thanks, Pokey

Thanks for all the sugestions and tricks. A good friend came buy who used to sell Ns when they were knew and read all your replies. Said they all sounded good but You know you have a Sherman up and down in there i sure do not want to mess it up. How bout we try somthing NEW? He drilled a .578 or 37/64 hole just to the left of the inspection hole for the ring gear. Put in a srewdriver type tool and had the cluch free in no time. A little fiber optic light helped him see in the hole. Sealed the hole with a 3/8 pipe plug of brass. Works great.

Hi Pokey,
I did mine about 3 weeks ago. I used 2 floor jacks, one on each end of the tractor. Tips: (1)11/16 wrench takes off a lot of stuff,(2) you dont need to remove the starter unless you need to remove the flywheel after inspection (if you do remove starter put a nut on the starter bolt to hold it together while sitting out)(3) cut the heads off 2 bolts and use them to help realign the 2 halves of the tractor when putting it back together (4) you need a clutch alignment tool or a right sized shaft (5)Spin pto or fan belt to help align the splines when putting it back together (6) I would consider changing the throw out bearing while I was in there (7) inspect the flywheel and have it resurfaced and bearings changed if needed (7) don't rush and enjoy the work it's a fine machine to work on, even if it's a little greasy.

take a trailer tongue jack with a wheel on it. Bolt it to the rear half where you split it and block up the engine/front half. take it apart and roll the rear half back carefully. really easy to do and no jacking with floor jacks or bottle jacks

Use a cherry picker type engine hoist. Put slings under the crank case of the engine and take the weight off the front end.Separate the front end (axle/radiator)and swing it out of the way then block up under the tranny. Loosen the bolts between the tranny and engine and crack her apart.

Hi Pokey...last spring my clutch stuck to the flywheel and wouldn't break free after tryin' this and that...:-) Here's what I did...removed starter...took a round quarter inch steel rod...flattened the end like a screw driver blade...bent it into a 45 degree angle in my vice...reached in and tapped the flattened end between the clutch and flywheel...viola they separated just fine...now i keep the clutch petal blocked with a scrap of two by four.

I have done it a grand total of once. I had an overhead hoist to support the steering, a mickey mouse floor jack, lotsa blocks, and a regular bottle jack. It took 3 hours start to finish because I read the I&T manual at least three times before I started, had everything I needed handy (except a good floor jack), there were no surprise leaks or bad bearings, and the transmission only
fell off the jack once. I will have a quality floor jack before I do it again, but I'm old and have experienced my full quota of terror.
If you're young and bold you can borrow my old one. The one tip I can give you is that you can turn the transmission input shaft
with the PTO to make the input shaft splines mate with the clutch. I struggled with getting them aligned so they would mate until that idea hit.
